Manual Lymphatic Drainage Q & A

Updated: Aug 20

Manual Lymphatic Drainage can feel a little different from what you might expect — especially if you’re used to traditional massage. The touch is lighter, the movements are slower, and sometimes the techniques can seem surprisingly simple.

So, let’s talk about why.

Here are answers to some of the questions I hear most often about MLD —

Q. What Is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

A. “Lymphatic drainage massage” is a common name for Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) — a gentle, specialized technique designed to support the natural movement of lymph through the body.

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, lymph nodes and organs that plays an important role in fluid balance and immune function. You can think of it as part of the body’s natural cleanup and recycling system—collecting excess fluid from the tissues and transporting cellular waste, proteins and other substances through lymph nodes for filtering.

Unlike traditional massage, MLD isn’t focused on muscles or deep tissue. It uses slow, rhythmic movements and a gentle stretch of the skin to encourage the natural movement of lymph toward healthy drainage pathways.

Q. Why is the pressure so light? Is it really doing anything?

Yes! In Manual Lymphatic Drainage, lighter really is better.

The goal isn’t to force or squeeze fluid through the body—it’s to work with the lymphatic system and support what it naturally does.

The Vodder Method uses gentle, rhythmic pressure because many of the lymphatic vessels we’re working with are located just beneath the skin. Rather than pressing deeply into the muscles, MLD gently stretches the skin to stimulate the superficial lymphatic vessels and encourage lymph to move.

Q. How do I know if I would benefit from Lymphatic Drainage?

A. You don’t need to have lymphedema to benefit from Manual Lymph Drainage. MLD may be helpful if you’re experiencing swelling, puffiness, heaviness or fluid retention, or if your lymphatic system is under increased demand due to surgery, injury or certain health conditions.

MLD can also be used as a gentle wellness practice to support healthy lymphatic flow, circulation and relaxation.

Q. What can I expect after Manual Lymph Drainage?

A. Everyone responds a little differently. After MLD, you may notice less swelling or puffiness, a feeling of lightness, or a deep sense of relaxation. Some people also notice increased urination as the body processes shifts in fluid.

During MLD, lymph is encouraged through the lymphatic vessels and nodes toward the larger lymphatic ducts, where it eventually returns to the bloodstream near the collarbones. From there, your body continues doing what it naturally does — circulating, filtering and maintaining healthy fluid balance.

You may feel a difference right away, while other changes can be more subtle or happen gradually over several sessions.

Q. If my swelling is in one area, why do you work on my whole Lymphatic System?

A. Your lymphatic system works as a connected network, so even when swelling is concentrated in one area, healthy lymph flow depends on the pathways beyond that area too.

That’s why each MLD session begins by opening the Big 6, in order. Using our river analogy, we open the larger downstream pathways first, creating space for fluid coming from the smaller streams upstream.

Once those pathways are prepared, we can give more attention to the area where you’re experiencing swelling—knowing the lymph has somewhere to go.
